Taxonomic Etymology:
Named in honor of an early Texas herpetologist.
Trimorphodon — From Greek tri- (τρι-), “three,” morphe (μορφή), “form,” and odon (ὀδών), “tooth.” The name means “three-formed tooth,” likely referencing the snake’s specialized dentition, including enlarged rear fangs.
vilkinsonii — A patronym honoring Edward Wilkinson (1846–1914), a naturalist and curator who worked in El Paso, Texas, and contributed significantly to the study of regional herpetofauna.
