Taxonomic Etymology:
Named for its four-striped dorsal pattern.
Plestiodon — Greek origin, meaning “abundant tooth.”
tetragrammus — From Greek tetra- (four) and grammē (γραμμή, line or stripe), meaning “four-lined,” describing the four dorsal stripes typical of the species.
