Taxonomic Etymology:
Named after the Indigenous Wintu people.
Hydromantes — From Greek hydro- (ὕδωρ), “water,” and mantēs (μάντης), “seer” or “diviner.” While the exact etymology is obscure, it likely evokes a poetic sense of “water spirit” or “creature of wet places,” appropriate for this lungless, moisture-dependent genus.
wintu — A noun in apposition honoring the Wintu people, the Indigenous group whose ancestral homeland encompasses the salamander’s range. The name recognizes cultural and ecological stewardship of the region.
