Named for its fine scalation.
Urosaurus — From Greek oura (οὐρά), “tail,” and sauros (σαῦρος), “lizard.” The name means “tailed lizard,” highlighting the often long tails of members of this genus.
microscutatus — From Greek mikros, “small,” and Latin scutatus, “shielded” or “scaled.” The name means “small-scaled,” referencing the fine dorsal scales that distinguish it from close relatives.
