Taxonomic Etymology:
Named for its distinctive row of dark dorsal spots.
Nerodia — From Greek neron (νερόν), meaning “water,” and possibly hodos (ὁδός), meaning “path” or “way,” though the construction is irregular. The name alludes to the aquatic nature of these snakes.
taxispilota — From Greek taxis (τάξις), meaning “order” or “arrangement,” and spilos (σπίλος), meaning “spot,” meaning “orderly-spotted” or “having regularly arranged spots.”
