Taxonomic Etymology:
Named in honor of a southeastern U.S. herpetologist.
Necturus — From Greek for “swimming tail,” referring to its aquatic adaptation.
moleri — A patronym honoring Paul Moler, a herpetologist recognized for his contributions to the study and conservation of southeastern U.S. amphibians and reptiles.
