SSAR 9th Edition Comments:
Goldberg et al. (2004, Herpetologica 60: 312–320) suggested that C. a. cactorum and C. a. latrans are different species but did not make the taxonomic change. Fouquette and Dubois (2014, Checklist of North American Amphibians and Reptiles, Xlibris 7(1)), referring to the work by Goldberg et al. (op. cit.) proposed recognition of the two subspecies. We do not recognize any subspecies pending additional data, preferably including nuclear DNA, and more substantial sampling in Mexico.

Taxonomic Etymology:
The scientific name combines a genus name derived from Greek roots with a Latinized species epithet honoring a person:
Craugastor — From Greek roots: κραυγή (kraugē) = “a shout” or “loud cry”; ἀστήρ (astēr) or possibly γαστήρ (gastēr) = “belly” (if interpreted as gastor). The name has been variously interpreted, but most likely means: “Shouting belly” or “loud-bellied,” a reference to the loud calls of species in this genus.
augusti — A patronym, honoring Auguste Henri André Duméril (1812–1870), French zoologist and herpetologist for his contributions to herpetology. The Latin suffix -i indicates “of August” or “belonging to August(e).”
