Named in honor of a donor and amateur naturalist.
Ambystoma — Greek amblys = "blunt" + stoma = "mouth"
mabeei — Patronym honoring William B. Mabee (1897–?), an entomologist affiliated with North Carolina State College in the 1920s; Latinized possessive form.
