Eastern Collared Lizard

Crotaphytus collaris (Say in James, 1822 “1823”)

Overview

The Collared Lizard is characterized by four limbs, an ear opening on each side of the head, smooth granular scales on the back, and one or two dark bands on the neck. The body, large head, limbs, and tail are bluish green or green in males and light brown in females; both sexes have small dark and light spots. The neck has one or two black bands. The belly is white. The throat is yellow or orange in males. Males have larger heads, grow to a larger size, and are more brightly colored than females. During pregnancy, females (otherwise only shades of tan with brown blotches and white flecks dorsally) develop transverse orange bars along the sides of their body.
Adults normally 203- 306 mm (8-12 inches) in total length. The largest specimen from Kansas is a male (KU 84623) from Chase County with a snout-vent length of 110 mm and a total length of 302 mm (12 inches) collected by Charles J. Cole on 27 August 1963. The maximum length throughout the range is 355.6 mm (14 inches) (Conant and Collins, 1998).

Distribution

Common in association with rocky areas but may also substitute mammal burrows along canyons in the southwest and south-central portions of the state (first reported by Tihen and Sprague, 1939). In northcentral Kansas, it is found in association with outcrops of the Cretaceous Greenhorn Limestone, Dakota Formation, and Niobrara Chalk (rarely). In south-central Kansas is known from outcrops of Quaternary Ogallala, Cretaceous Kiowa Shale and Cheyenne Sandstone, and the various Permian groups. In southeastern Kansas (east of the Flint Hills, and south of the Kansas River) Eastern Collared Lizards have been found in association with outcrops of the Pennsylvanian Wabaunsee Group, Shawnee Group, Douglas Group, Lansing Group, Pleasanton Group, and the western edge of the Cherokee Group.
The specimens from Johnson (KU 189283), Kearney (221495), McPherson (KU 218857), Norton (FHSM 16932), and Stanton (KU 192220) counties are in need of corroboration. Subsequent visits to these sites have failed to yield additional specimens. They may represent individual releases.
Specimens exist for Hamilton County (KU 27746-8) but are only given to the county and therefore not plotted. It lends support to the Kearney and Stanton county records, as do specimens from adjacent populations in Colorado (Hammerson 1986,1999).

Reproduction

Collared Lizards are restricted to rocky areas on plains and near woodlands. Adults are active from April to September, although young individuals frequently are observed as late as mid-October. They prefer air temperatures ranging from 73° to 93°F. This aggressive, fast lizard is active only during the day, perching on rocks to bask in the sun and watch for enemies. If disturbed, it may run with its front feet held off the ground, using its strong hind limbs to race to a burrow or crevice beneath a large rock. Each Collared Lizard is territorial and has a home range of up to several thousand square feet. Invasion of a male's territory causes immediate response. The defending lizard displays his bright colors to discourage the invader. If this fails, the invader is attacked and chased from the area.
During winter months, Legler and Fitch (1957) found this species burrowed in small chambers beneath large rocks with small, partially dirt-filled tunnels leading to the edge of each rock. In these burrows the lizards were 203.2-304.8 mm (8-12 inches) below ground.

This lizard breeds during May and June after emerging from winter inactivity. Courtship involves the male displaying his bright throat and body colors to the female as he struts about her. After displaying, he moves around and over her in a relaxed, slithering walk, rapidly bobbing his head up and down. If the female is receptive, the male grasps the skin of her neck with his mouth, bends the rear part of his body under her tail, and copulation occurs.
Shortly after becoming pregnant and developing the characteristic orange-red spots or bars on her sides, the female seeks a nest of moist earth beneath a large rock or in a burrow. The eggs, numbering 2- 11 (Fitch, 1985), are laid within three weeks after mating and hatching occurs in two to three months. Females frequently have a second clutch each season.
Collared Lizards hunt their food by sight, running swiftly from their perches to grab observed prey. Grasshoppers, moths, beetles, spiders, wasps, and cicadas are eaten, as well as smaller lizards. Hallowell (1857) reported grasshoppers and beetles in the stomach of a specimen. Burt (1928) found that 95 percent of the food of Kansas specimens consisted of grasshoppers and moths.
Chief predators of the Collared Lizard are hawks and snakes. Werth (1974) reported aquatic behavior by this lizard in Ellis County.

Remarks

First reported in Kansas by Hallowell (1856) from "Kansas". The earliest existing specimen (Museum of Comparative Zoology [MCZ 5937]) was collected at Fort Riley, Riley County. The MCZ catalog entry provides no other information, other than that the specimen was received from the Smithsonian Institution in 1879.
Eastern Collared Lizards can be difficult to capture. During cool weather, they can regularly be found snuggled up under rocks in a relatively torpid state where they are slow to move, and thus easy to pick up. However, during warm weather or sunny days, you’ll often need help; one person to lift a rock and the other to see which nearby rock it darted under. This process is repeated over and over (and typically involves lifting the same rocks several times) until one of you makes a successful lunge and pins the lizard against the ground. At this point, the collectors are either thankful for the leather gloves they’re wearing, or wishing that they would have thought ahead and put them on back at the car. The Eastern Collared Lizard is non-venomous and its teeth are actually quite small and of little consequence in its bite. The discomfort comes from the force of the bite; evolved to crush grasshoppers but effective at pinching unprotected fingers as well. Once controlled in hand, they can easily and safely be carried by grasping them around their body just behind the head. The lizard can then be placed temporarily in a pillowcase or other cloth bag for further examination or release.
Burt (1935) reported on a young collared lizard that was found under a rock in a prairie ledge near Altoona, Kansas, and in trying to escape it jumped into a large spider web from which it was unable to free itself without help.
Charles E. Burt (Burt and Hoyle 1935) chased a large Collared Lizard down a steep hill in Elk County, Kansas, on 22 April 1933, it dived into a pool of muddy water, where it hid in complete submergence beneath a small flat rock in an attempt to escape detection and capture
