The Amphibians, Reptiles, and Turtles of Colorado

This checklist is based on the sixth (2009) edition of Standard Common and Current Scientific Names for North American Amphibians, Turtles, Reptiles, and Crocodilians by Joseph T. Collins and Travis W. Taggart, and the third edition (2003) of the Peterson Field Guide to Western Reptiles and Amphibians by Robert C. Stebbins. Some common names in the latter publication are incorrect and users of this list should adhere to the names compiled herein in order to permit ease of use across the U.S. states and Canadian provinces. In addition to providing a complete hierarchical taxonomy (fully supported by current molecular evidence) with author attribution and year of description, the current scientific name of each native species of amphibian, reptile, and turtle that has been verified from Colorado is shown as well as its standard common name. This herpetofaunal checklist is updated daily by The Center for North American Herpetology, the only such service available to the North American herpetological community and Colorado herpetologists and biologists. CNAH is grateful for the assistance provided by Tina Jackson in constructing this list.
