The Amphibians, Reptiles, and Turtles of North Carolina This checklist is based on the sixth (2009) edition of Standard Common and Current Scientific Names for North American Amphibians, Turtles, Reptiles, and Crocodilians by Joseph T. Collins and Travis W. Taggart, the third edition (1998) of the Peterson Field Guide to Reptiles and Amphibians of Eastern and Central North America by Roger Conant and Joseph T. Collins, and the Carolina Herp Atlas (with a few modifications of common names from the latter). In addition to providing a complete hierarchical taxonomy (fully supported by modern molecular evidence) with author attribution and year of description, the current scientific name of each species of amphibian, reptile, and turtle that has been verified from North Carolina is shown as well as its standard common name. This herpetofaunal checklist is updated daily by The Center for North American Herpetology, the only such service available to the North American herpetological community and North Carolina herpetologists. | ||||||
